Sewer Line Replacement in West Valley City, UT

When the lateral is genuinely done — collapsed, Orangeburg, or failing in five places — replacement is the answer. Here is what it involves and what it costs.

A full replacement is a job you should only ever need to do once.

Replacement is the biggest sewer job there is, and it is worth being clear about when it is genuinely warranted, because it is also the one most likely to be recommended when a repair would do.

The honest triggers are: a collapsed section, Orangeburg pipe anywhere in the run, cast iron that has corroded through along its length, clay with multiple separated joints and heavy root intrusion, or significant bellies where the line has settled out of grade. In those cases patching one spot leaves you with the rest of a pipe that is going to fail on its own schedule.

What you get in return is a single continuous run of modern PVC with far fewer joints, laid at proper grade with correct bedding, and a lateral that should outlast everybody currently in the house. Done properly, this is a job you do once.

When it is warranted

When replacement is genuinely the right call

  • The line has collapsed. No cleaning or lining option applies. The pipe is no longer there to line.
  • It is Orangeburg. Bituminous fibre pipe used in some mid-century installs. It deforms into an oval and then collapses. It gets replaced, not repaired.
  • Multiple failures along the run. Five separated joints is not five spot repairs. It is a line at the end of its life.
  • Significant bellies. Lining follows the existing grade, so it cannot fix a low spot. Correcting grade means excavating.
  • Severely corroded cast iron. Where the bottom of the pipe has rusted away along its length, there is nothing sound to line against.
  • Undersized or wrongly routed pipe. Occasionally a lateral was undersized or badly graded from the start. Replacement is the chance to correct it.

Methods

Two ways to replace a lateral

Open trench

The traditional method. Excavate the full route, remove the old pipe, lay new PVC at correct grade on proper bedding, backfill in compacted lifts. Lowest per-foot cost, highest surface disruption. Best where the route is open lawn.

Pipe bursting

A bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, fracturing it outward while drawing new HDPE in behind. Works from a pit at each end. Higher per-foot cost, dramatically less surface damage. Best under driveways, patios and mature landscaping. See trenchless.

Which is cheaper overall

Not the one with the lower per-foot rate. Once you add cutting and replacing a concrete driveway, or removing and replacing established planting, trenchless frequently comes out ahead. We price both.

The project

What a replacement week looks like

  1. Survey and permit

Camera, locate and depth survey. Permit pulled, utility locates called in, route and restoration agreed in writing.

  2. Excavate or set pits

Full trench, or entry and exit pits for bursting. Shoring where depth requires it, and the site fenced and made safe.

  3. Install

New PVC or HDPE laid to grade on correct bedding, connection made at the house and at the public sewer, cleanout fitted.

  4. Inspect and restore

City inspection with the trench open, camera the finished line, then backfill in compacted lifts and restore the surface.

Costs

Sewer line replacement costs in West Valley City

Depth is the biggest single driver, followed by what is above the line. A shallow run under lawn is a very different job from a deep run under a driveway.

ScenarioTypical rangeNotes
Short run under lawn (up to 40 ft)$6,000 – $10,000Open trench, moderate depth.
Typical lateral (40–80 ft)$8,000 – $16,000Open trench, includes cleanout.
Long or deep run$14,000 – $25,000Depth over about 8 ft needs shoring and adds significantly.
Pipe bursting, per foot$100 – $250Plus pits and connections.
Driveway cut and replaceadd $2,000 – $6,000Often the argument for going trenchless.
Sidewalk or street cutadd $1,500 – $5,000Municipal restoration requirements apply.
Landscaping restorationvariesUsually handled by a landscaper and priced separately.

Includes permit, locates and inspection. Typical West Valley City ranges, not quotes — every route is different and we survey before pricing.

Do it once

Things worth including while the trench is open

  • A proper exterior cleanout. If the property never had one, this is the moment. It makes every future service cheaper and cleaner.
  • A backwater valve where appropriate. On properties where the fixtures sit below the street sewer level, it protects against a municipal surcharge backing into the house.
  • Correct bedding and compaction. Skimping here is why some replacements develop a belly within five years. It is not visible and it is not optional.
  • Tracer tape or wire. So the line can be located easily in future without guesswork.
  • A final camera run. Recorded, so you have documented evidence of grade and condition from day one.
  • Full paperwork. Permit, inspection sign-off and warranty, which all matter at resale.

FAQ

Sewer Line Replacement: your questions answered

How much does it cost to replace a sewer line in West Valley City?

Typically $6,000 to $18,000 for a residential lateral, with most jobs landing in the $8,000 to $16,000 range. Depth, length, and what sits above the route — lawn versus driveway versus street — are what move the number most.

How long will I be without drainage?

Usually one day, sometimes two on a deep or complicated run. We tell you exactly when the line will be open and when it will be back, so you can plan around it.

Will you have to dig up my driveway?

Only if the line runs under it and we are using open trench. That is precisely the case where pipe bursting earns its higher per-foot rate, because it works from pits either side.

Do I need a permit?

Yes. Sewer replacement is permitted, inspected work, and the trench is inspected before backfilling. We handle the permit, the utility locates and the inspection.

What pipe do you use?

Schedule 40 PVC for open-trench work, in long lengths with solvent-welded joints, or HDPE fused into a continuous run for pipe bursting. Both are far more durable than the clay or cast iron they replace.

Will my yard be ruined?

An open trench leaves a strip that needs re-turfing. We backfill in compacted lifts and restore the grade, but final landscaping is normally handled by a landscaper. With pipe bursting the disturbance is limited to two small pits.

Does insurance cover replacement?

Usually not. Standard policies exclude the sewer line itself, treating it as maintenance rather than sudden damage. Some carriers offer a service line endorsement, and some utilities offer protection plans, which are worth looking into before you need them.

Been told you need a new sewer line?

Get a second opinion with the camera footage in hand. Plenty of lines that get quoted for replacement only need a repair.
