Pipe Repair in West Valley City, UT

Pinholes, split seams, failed solder joints and corroded threads. We cut out the failed section, replace it properly, and pressure test before we leave.

A leaking pipe is one of those jobs where the fix is either genuinely simple or genuinely not, and the difference is almost entirely about access. Cutting out and replacing a two-foot section of exposed copper in a basement is an hour's work. The same repair four feet inside a finished wall behind tile involves locating, careful access, and putting the surface back afterwards.

What does not change is how the repair itself is done. We cut back to sound pipe on both sides of the failure, not just around the hole, because the conditions that produced one pinhole are usually present for several inches either side. Then we replace with new material, properly supported, with the correct transition fittings if we are joining dissimilar metals.

What we do not do is wrap it in tape, clamp it, or epoxy it and call that a repair. Those things have a place as a temporary measure to get you through a night. They are not a fix, and selling them as one is how people end up with water damage six weeks later.

What fails

The failures we repair most

Copper pinholes

Small perforations from internal or external corrosion, most often on the hot side. They start as a weep and grow. Where we find one, we check the rest of that run carefully.

Split sections

Usually freeze damage, and usually a lengthwise split rather than a hole at a joint. The whole affected length comes out. See frozen pipes.

Failed solder joints

Age, movement and water hammer work joints loose. A weeping joint is re-made properly rather than re-soldered over contamination.

Corroded galvanized threads

Where steel pipe fails first. Repairs here usually mean replacing the section and transitioning to PEX or copper with a dielectric union.

Failed valves and stops

Angle stops that will not close, seized gate valves, leaking main shutoffs. Cheap to replace, expensive to be without.

Under-slab failures

Repaired in place or bypassed entirely, depending on location. See slab leak repair.

The repair

How we repair a pipe properly

  1. Isolate and drain

Closest upstream valve, line drained down so the repair is made dry and the joint is sound.

  2. Cut back to sound pipe

Past the failure on both sides. On corroded pipe that means further than the hole suggests.

  3. Replace and transition

New copper or PEX, correct fittings, dielectric unions where dissimilar metals meet, properly supported.

  4. Pressure test

Brought back up and held while we watch it, plus a check of the joints either side of the repair.

Repair or replace

When a repair is the wrong answer

There is a point where repairing costs more than replacing, and it arrives sooner than most people expect. Some honest markers:

Two or more failures in two years. Pipe of the same age, in the same water, under the same pressure, fails on roughly the same schedule. The third leak is already on its way.

Galvanized steel of any age past fifty. When we cut a section out and the bore has closed to a third of its original diameter, that is what the whole system looks like.

Polybutylene. Widely installed between the late 70s and mid 90s and prone to fitting failure. Repairing it piecemeal is not a strategy.

Pressure over 80 psi with no PRV. Fix the pressure or the new work is on the same clock as the old.

Where you are in genuinely sound copper or PEX, a repair is exactly the right answer and we will say so.

FAQ

Pipe Repair: your questions answered

Can a leaking pipe just be patched?

A clamp or a wrap can hold a small pinhole for a short time, and if you are waiting for morning, use one. As a permanent repair it is not reliable, because it depends on the pipe wall around the clamp staying sound, and on a corroding pipe it will not.

How long does a pipe repair take?

An accessible section is usually one to two hours. Behind a finished wall, add time for locating and access — typically half a day including testing. A slab repair is a full day.

Will you fix the drywall?

We cut clean, square access holes and can arrange patching and painting, or leave it for your own contractor. If a restoration company is already drying the area, it usually makes sense for them to close it up.

Can you repair galvanized pipe, or does it all have to go?

We can repair it, usually by replacing the failed section and transitioning to PEX or copper with the correct dielectric fitting. Whether you should is a different question, and it depends on what the inside of the cut-out section looks like. We will show you.

Why did my pipe develop a pinhole?

Most commonly a combination of water chemistry, high velocity at a bend or fitting, and age. Hard water and high pressure both accelerate it. Pinholes cluster, so finding one is a reason to inspect the rest of that run rather than assume it was unlucky.

Do you repair PEX?

Yes, though it fails far less often than copper or steel. When PEX does fail it is usually a fitting, a section damaged by a fastener during a remodel, or UV degradation where it has been exposed to sunlight.

Pipe leaking?

Shut off the nearest valve and call. We will repair it properly and tell you straight whether the rest of the run needs attention.
